Daily access to such high-quality food allows Allrecipes home cook, Sarah, to experiment with ever-changing menus, utilizing what's fresh and available at the moment. An urban farmer, Sarah grows her own vegetables and raises chickens in the back yard. Join us as she shows Michael how to make her Grandmother's Blackberry Pie!

The Recipe

Grandma's Blackberry Pie
Grandma's Blackberry Pie This handmade delight is sure to dazzle your taste buds. Fresh August / September blackberries from the Pacific Northwest make it incredibly delicious. If it's still too juicy for you, simply add a little flour to the fruit mix.

"I know apples in a blackberry pie seem a little weird but my Grandma swears they soak up the juice and now I can't enjoy a blackberry pie without them," states Sarah.

Tips & Tricks

If it's still too juicy for you, simply add a little flour or tapioca to the fruit mix.

When craving this pie in the winter, substitute frozen blackberries, even those you froze yourself from your summer pickings. Add berries frozen to the crust.

Sarah, Allrecipes.com Sarah (Syrah4689) is originally from Dallas, Oregon, now living in Portland proper.

"I am a serious cooking enthusiast living in the RAINY Northwest. Getting cooped up inside most weekends makes it easy for me to spend time making the kitchen explode! I've definitely taken after my Grandma when it comes to cooking and making it look like a bomb hit the kitchen - but more often than not the mess is worthwhile when it comes to spending a great evening with my other half or a group of friends enjoying great wine and drinks and a delicious dinner. Cooking in a healthy and local/organic way has become a higher priority over the last few years and having a large veggie garden as well as my own backyard urban chickens should now make for great food and gatherings. I'm really glad I was able to participate in 'What's Cooking?'! I love Allrecipes and am excited to see the direction it's heading in!"

Michael's Notes & Quotes (Over a Cup O' Joe)

"When you die, if you get a choice between going to regular heaven or pie heaven, choose pie heaven. It might be a trick, but if it's not, mmmmmmmm, boy."    ~ Jack Handey

This was a good trip! Portland is a beautiful city! It started out in typical fashion, gray and misty, but right before noon, the sun came out and the clouds disappeared! Tom McCall Waterfront Park was beautiful as we walked along the water, viewing the many bridges that span the Willamette River. The park is a haven for nature lovers, but that's no surprise. Portland is proud of its parks and its legacy of preserving open spaces.

Portland is also forefront in the sustainable food movement occurring nationwide that encourages people to eat more locally grown and locally produced foods. This was evident immediately as I arrived at Sarah's house, and she escorted me straight to her backyard urban garden as well as pointing out the numerous chickens roaming its perimeter. Sarah and her significant other also make homemade dog food for their dog, which I thought was pretty cool. You can watch the video to see how my first experience EVER at baking went but I just have say to say, I make a danged good pie. Sitting there eating homemade pie, with cold vanilla ice cream evokes a nostalgic "back to Mayberry" response. Thank you, Sarah!
