Allrecipes.com "What's Cooking?" - Gilbertsville, PA

This week finds us just outside of Philadelphia in Gilbertsville, PA with Allrecipes cook, Patti! We whipped up a delicious Veal Mozzarella as well as a Willy Wonka inspired Fizzy Lifting Drink. This was followed by a a movie under the stars in the backyard! The warm weather of summer and early fall creates the perfect opportunity to get together with the neighbors, family, and friends for an evening of movie watching fun right in your own backyard, and Patti and family have this down to an art. If you have never hosted a backyard movie night, you are really missing out on a great way to spend time with the people in your life!

The Recipe

Veal Mozzarella
Veal Mozzarella These wafer-thin, melt-in-your-mouth veal cutlets are smothered in a decadent buttery sherry sauce. Originally inspired by Ralph's Italian Restaurant in South Philly, this dish is excellent for dinner parties. Patti serves this with a salad tossed with raspberry vinaigrette and goat cheese crumbles, greens sauteed in garlic and olive oil, Italian bread, and plenty of white wine! It also goes well over angel hair pasta. Fizzy Lifting Drink

Additionally, Patti showed us how to make her fabulous concoction named after the drink of the same name in Willy Wonka, the Fizzy Lifting Drink.

Tips & Tricks

Pound veal cutlets with the flat side of a meat mallet to a uniform thickness for even cooking. The same goes for chicken if you substitute it for veal.

Veal's delicate flavor is compatible with a variety of seasonings. Try garlic, lemon peel, black pepper, lemon pepper, or Italian seasoning. Fresh fruit salsas and dried fruit sauces also go surprisingly well with veal.

Patti, Allrecipes.com Patti is a cook who loves to feed people! She looooooves to have friends and family over, and will frequently have friends stopping by at a moment's notice to hang out in her backyard. With a large blowup big screen and video projector, they host many a "Movie Night Under the Stars" for friends and family.

"On most summer nights, we'll be outside hanging with great friends, sipping beverages, and eating appetizers. This means right now my main focus is on appetizers, finger foods, and cocktails that we can all still enjoy outside until it gets too cold. I am also famous for my "walking tacos" parties, which, simply described, consists of small bags of corn or tortilla chips, and all the taco fixins. No plates are required as you only have to add the fixings directly to the bag!    View Cook's Profile >>>

Michael's Notes & Quotes (Over a Cup O' Joe)

Sometimes I pray to Cod for the veal-power to stop playing with my food words, but I fear it's too bread into me. For all I know, the wurst may be yet to come."
~ Mark Morton, 'Arts & Scantlings' (Gastronomica, Fall 2006)

Drive-ins are, for the most part, a thing of the past. I remember going to the Drive-In with my parents in the back of the dark blue, Ford Galaxy 500 station wagon, piled high with pillows and blankets. At the start of the movie, we'd be down at the playground just under the large screen, while cartoons like Woody Woodpecker played directly above our heads. We sometimes forget what a magical experience a great movie can be. There are many truly wonderful films we would love to share with our children - classics like Willy Wonka and The Wizard of Oz, or more contemporary gems like Babe or Toy Story.

This week I had the opportunity to revisit a bit of that charm, watching a movie with Allrecipes cook, Patti, along with friends and family under under the stars on a warm summer night as the special occasion it really should be. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

I started my day running up the 72 steps before the entrance of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, made famous by Sylvester Stallone in the movie Rocky. Ok, maybe not all 72 steps but it took 3 takes so I'm sure I got close. From there, we headed over to Philadelphia's historic farmers market, Reading Terminal Market. The nation's oldest continuously operating farmers' market providing virtually every type of cuisine, from sublime soul food and exquisite Asian and Middle Eastern dishes to authentic Philly Cheesesteaks and traditional Pennsylvania Dutch fare.

Ok, now I was hungry and it was time to head to Patti's. We quickly whipped up her Veal Mozzarella and then her Fizzy Lifting Drink, inspired by tonight's movie, Willy Wonka. It was a great trip! Thank you, Patty, family, and friends!
